Minutes Paardeberg Unit, 1 CAV
August 7, 2012

7:05 pm Flatfoot, Sgt-at-Arms called the meeting to order with a request for one minute of Silence for fallen soldiers and riders broken by:
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them, We will remember them.

In attendance:
Executive: Mapper, Vice-President; Flatfoot, Sgt-at-Arms; Spider, Webmaster/Road Captain and Lucster, Assistant Road Captain

Members: Newf, Hammer, Jay, Jacks, Big Al, J.C., Nuke, Smiley, Nets, Beverly & BGruff, and Silly

Regrets: Trev, President; Kathy, Secretary; Mel, Assistant Road Captain and Alabama

1. Vice-President Opening Remarks/Report
Mapper welcomed everyone and asked members to introduce themselves.

Welcomed Hammer back to the fold.

There was lots of activity concerning future events that came out of the executive meeting held July 4th. Such as:

  • July 8th The Sicily Unit's "Ride for Homeless Veterans on Highway 43: the Glengary Highlanders Memorial Highway” raised $6,000.00 with 7 members of Paarderberg attending.
  • July 13th “Port Dover Friday the 13th run” was successful with 3 Paarderberg members attending: Mel, Trev & Kathy.
  • July 20thHammer’s welcome home party” Thank you Newf, Fun was had by all.
  • July 21thRide for rescue cats” 11 Paarderberg members attended for a total 40 bikes raising $2,100.00 ( Newf & Hammer receiving the prize for having raised the second most donations)
  • August 3rd to the 5thThe CAV National Annual General Meeting during this weekend motorcycle rally in Napanee. 4 Paarderberg members attending including a few Cambrai Members. Good turnout.

Upcoming Events:

  • Aug 11th Eastern Ontario HOG Chapter’s “Breast ride ever” All are welcome, starting from Freedom Harley Davidson of Ottawa located on Merivale rd. Registration 9 until 10 am $20.00 per rider, $20.00/passenger
  • Aug 18th “Sunshine BBQ” at the Russell, baseball diamonds. E-mail to follow including RV and timings.
  • Aug 16-19th, “2012 Military Police National Motorcycle Relay Ride” More info on their website: http://www.mpnmrr.ca/
  • August 25th Boomers Legacy Petawawa to Ottawa has been cancelled
  • August 25th Paardeberg Unit Annual BBQ - Jacks and Alabama are hosting the unit's annual BBQ at their home in Embrum. There will be a ride to the BBQ arriving at Jack's and Alabama's in time for dinner time. See points from the floor.
  • September 23rd “Army Run” Spider OPI, More info to follow.

2. Sergeant-at-Arms Report
No change in the membership. $490.00

3. Road Captain's Report
Confirmed the RV for the September 23rd “Army Run” will be at the Tim Horton’s on Alta-Vista Drive off Industrial. Trapper and his group will RV with us there. Timings and more info to be confirmed at a later date.

4. Points from the Floor
Jacks and Alabama are looking forward to hosting the Unit at their place, bring your fishing pole if you like as you can fish from their backyard. An initial price of five dollars per person was suggested with a contribution of no more than $200.00 voted on from our unit account. Motion proposed by Mapper, Second by the majority in attendance.

Smiley inquired about the “Veterans Memorial Highway Ride” This event is hosted by Cambrai Unit and falls on the same day as the Perley Rideau Veterans Hospital's annual Family Day. This year it will be on September 8th. More infor to come from Cambrai Unit.

Hammer mentioned a number of items from The CAV national meetings:

  • He attended a presentation for ICROSS. A charitable non-profit organization tor relieve starving and suffering people in Africa. http://www.icross.ca/ A organization strongly supported by the CAV and therefore the ICROSS crest will soon reflect “ ICROSS Canada” which will include “CAV humanitarian”.
  • He also noted that Trapper encourages CAV members to “keep up the good work”
  • In 2014 when the mandate in Afghanistan is scheduled to terminate there will be lots of activities for CAV members to participate in.
  • “Keep our identity the way it is” “Ride and have fun while supporting others”.
  • It was also mentioned that Paarderberg showed a good example by displaying their rides and those who participate in them with pictures on their website and encouraged others to do the same.

5. Closing Remarks
Mapper thanked everyone for coming out to the meeting and encouraged members to stay a while and visit.
