Minutes Paardeberg Unit, 1 CAV
October 2, 2012

7:05 pm Flatfoot, Sgt-at-Arms called the meeting to order with a request for one minute of Silence for fallen soldiers and riders broken by:
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them, We will remember them.

In attendance:
Executive: Trev, President; Kathy, Secretary; Flatfoot, Sgt-at-Arms; Spider, Webmaster/Road Captain; Mel, Assistant Road Captain and Lucster, Assistant Road Captain

Members: Hammer, Newf, Watch Dog, Wayne, Bgruff, Big Al, Smiley, Alabama, Nets, Witch, Silly, Gepetto, Q-T-Cat, Jay, Road Runner, Denny and Tommy Boy

1. President Opening Remarks/Report
Trev welcomed everyone.

2. Road Captain's Report
Past Events:

  • September 8 Veterans Memorial Ride:- A rainy day, but four members participated in this year’s event which was much smaller. The Family Day at the Perley Rideau Veterans Home was cancelled. Cambrai’s cheque presentation will take place at a later date.
  • September 9 Guide Dog Dice Run:- A beautiful day, with six members of Paardeberg Unit participating.
  • September 15 Cruise Don't Bruise:- Fundraiser for the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre – Paardeberg Unit had a good turnout, with a nice BBQ lunch.
  • September 16 Ride of Spendor:- Fundraiser for Carleton Place Regional Hospital – Spider lead us on this ride through Lanark and area with a nice turn out.
  • September 23 “Army Run” Spider led the Vanguard. JP, Jay, Harper, and Trev participated.
  • September 29-30 Huntsville Fall Colours:- Spider organized and led this ride to Huntsville via Algonquin Park and back through Bancroft. There were 7 bikes with 10 participants on the way up and 8 bikes with 12 participants on the way home. It was cool, but the colours were spectacular.

Upcoming Events:* Riding season is coming to a close, but Spider hopes to get a warm enough day to do a ride up to Mont Tremblant.

  • October 6 :– Vimy Unit of 1 CAV’s Fall Colours Ride to various Legions
  • October 21 :– The 2nd Anniversary of the passing of Moon Mullins a valued member of Paardeberg Unit.

Spider will be adding the photos to the website now that the weather is getting colder. He has been posting photos to the 1CAV Ottawa – Gatineau Facebook group and encouraged others to do so. If you are on facebook send Spider or Kathy your facebook name so you can be added to the group.

3. Sergeant-at-Arms Report

  • Membership renewals are coming in. Thank you to our members for renewing quickly and/or letting Flatfoot know you will be renewing.
  • CWO Darcy Elder with Veterans Affairs Canada from Charlottetown, PEI joined the Vanguard for the Army Run. It was great to have him along with Mr Keith Hillier, ADM Veterans Affairs Canada, Charlottetown. Darcy is making sure that the bureaucrats in Charlottetown learn what it is like for veterans who are applying for benefits.
  • Flatfoot participated in a “Memorial Ride for Larry Colotelo” Ride for Dad is looking to make this an annual ride.

4. President’s Remarks
Trev reported that:

  • November 10th //:– Unveiling of the Afghan memorial in Trenton
  • 1 CAV Vice President// :- Mad Dawg announced that Justus from Sicily Unit is the new 1 CAV V.P.
  • National Voting :- Trev reminded all veteran members to vote in The C.A.V. National voting process. It is important that all veterans vote for the changes that will allow The C.A.V. to move forward in becoming a National Not-for-Profit organization. The changes proposed are required to get The C.A.V. constitution and by-laws approved by Corporations Canada and will make The C.A.V. Kitshop part of the National Organization. At present they are two separate identities.

5. Points from the Floor
a) Christmas Party:- reservations are being organized for the Paardeberg Unit’s dinner at the Mills Street Pub and Brewery.
b) Americade:- Mel has booked accommodations for Americade in 2013 if others would like to go he will circulate the hotel information. Rooms fill up quite quickly for this event.
c) Fall Riding :- BGruff reminded members to ride carefully. Animals are becoming more of a hazard on the road. His van is in the shop after hitting a bear! So watch the road and ditches carefully.
d) Draw:- Big All was the winner of this week’s draw.

5. Closing Remarks
Trev thanked everyone for coming out to the meeting and encouraged members to stay a while and visit.
