Notes

7:00 pm Flatfoot, Sgt-at-Arms called the meeting to order with a request for one minute of Silence for fallen soldiers and riders:

The silence was broken with the reciting of:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning

In attendance:

1. Vice-President’s Opening Remarks
Jacks, Vice-President welcomed everyone asked members and guests to introduce themselves. Dingus was welcomed back to the unit. Members who joined Paardeberg when he did were very happy to see him back with us. We were introduced to his wife Wanda.

2. Sergeant-at-Arms Remarks
Flatfoot reported:

  • Unit fund is in good stead approximately $840
  • Nets has agreed to take over the Sgt-at-Arms position with the handover taking place at the June meeting. Flatfoot will be leaving for Naples approximately July 13. Jay is on parental leave and will be able to help Nets should the need arise.
  • Carl our newest member was introduced and his nickname is Odie.
  • Kathy, Secretary reported that Unit business cards have been printed and members were encouraged to take some to hand out. Feel free to add your name, etc using labels.

4. Road Captain Report
The sun is shining and lots of people rode to the meeting tonight. Looks like Summer is finally here. Hands off to our unit President Mapper who rode his motorcycle to Sunday's Wegner Point ceremony. He found it a bit chilly on the way up, but after buying some rubber gloves he was alot warmer on the ride home.

a) Past Events

  • PSA testing was a great success approximately 280 men were checked in 3.5 hours. 1 in 7 will get a call back notice and many of those may have already been mailed.

b) Upcoming Rides

  • May 9 - National Day of Honour for Afghan Veterans - Hammer will be there as well as a number of other members.
  • May 10 - Ride for Disable Vets starting from the grocery store in Stittsville. Funds will go to Wounded Warriors.
  • May 19 - Victoria Day Ride - Our annual ride to visit Pvt Richard Roland Thompson's grave site in Chelesa's Pioneer Cemetery. For more info check out http://paardeberg.wikidot.com/about-us
  • May 24 - 3rd annual Dice Run for the RCAC Unit 2804 Registration between 8:30 and 10 am at the Complexe J.R. Brisson Arena Casselman. ON Bike Show, Vendors and Swap Meet
  • May 31 - Motorcycle Ride for Dad - Ottawa Ride - Paardeberg will be blocking again so please give your name to Hammer after the meeting if you wish to block again this year. Don't forget to register and Hammer will send an email with the link to register as a blocker. NOTE remember when registering online to select our team Paardeberg Unit, The C.A.V.
  • June 1 - National Memorial Ride - RV at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum at 13:00 hrs - were red
  • June 8 - D-Day at the Canadian War Museum - watch your emails for more info.
  • June 13- Port Dover Friday 13th - A number of people are heading off to Dover for this event.
  • June 14- Ride for Rescue Cats

Don't forget we have started our weekly gathering at A&W and Tim Horton's on Hawthorne Wednesday nights to shoot the breeze and go for a ride. Hammer is looking for the Assistant Road Captains to help out with Wed nights. Everyone who is available is encouraged to attend and get to know the members of the Unit.

5. Presentations
a) Unit presentations:

  • Odie was presented with his Paardeberg Unit tag - he needs a Navy crest so Flatfoot will return the C.A.V. Army crest for exchange.
  • Gepetto presented Dingus with his Paardeberg Unit tag.
  • Hammer presented 2014 Ride for Dad Blocker year pins to Nets; Spider; Lucster and Silly. Hammer noted that the 2014 ride raised over $350,000.

b) Draw: tonight's winner was Jacks

6. Closing Remarks
Jacks thanked everyone for coming out to the meeting.

a) Adjournment
Jacks adjourned the meeting at 7:38pm and encouraged members to stick around and socialize and get to know our new members.
