June 4, 2013

7:00 pm Flatfoot, Sgt-at-Arms called the meeting to order with a request for one minute of Silence for fallen soldiers and riders:

The silence was broken with the reciting of:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning

1. President’s Opening Remarks
Trev, President welcomed everyone and skipped the introductions as there were so few of us in attendance.

2. Vice-President's Report
Mapper, Vice-President thanked everyone for their efforts over our very busy weekend last weekend with the Ottawa Ride for Dad; D-Day at the Canadian War Museum and the National Memorial Ride.

3. Sergeant-at-Arms Report
Sergeant-at-Arms reported that membership remains the same and that we have $730.34 in the unit fund.

4. Road Captain Report
Hammer acknowledge our Ride for Dad Blockers and all the support from the Unit over last weekend. Most importantly we were able to move all riders from the Canadian War Museum over to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum without any incidents. He acknowledged Cambrai's support as well.

Hammer reminder for following ride dates:
June 7-8th:- Bikes in the Bay - This is a CAV supported event and there will be a unit ride on Saturday up to Campbell's Bay
June 22nd:- CVFR - Allied Memorial Ride
June 23rd:- Merrickville Vintage Bikes - Show and Shine with prizes and music
July 6th:- Stormont Dundas and Glengary Highway 43 Ride - Sicily Unit organizes this year and we will be riding as a unit to support them
July 13th:- Unit BBQ - more details will follow but there will be a Unit ride and photo shoot so you will want to be there. There is room for camping please let our host know if you are camping.
July 20th:- Cat Sanctuary Ride - The Unit supports Big Al and Fran in their efforts to raise funds for the Cat Sanctuary
Aug 3 to 5:- Unit overnighter - looking at going to Syracuse to visit the Dinosaur BBQ

5. President's Report
a) Past Events
Trevor reviewed past activities:
May 10th:- Members went to St. Anne's Public School in Kanata for a Veterans Breakfast, but the info was incorrect and there was no breakfast
May 11th:- C.A.V. Padre, Padre Don's father-in-law passed away and a number of our members road down to Glenburnie for John Greenwood's funeral. He was 101.
May 12th:- A number of members rode up to Petawawa to attend the annual Wegner Point Memorial Service
May 18th:- Trev, Hall and Dino rode down to Moncton and attended the C.A.V. Spring National Meeting
May 19th:- Sicily Unit's Coin Collection - 6 Paardeberg members joined a Cambrai Ride and supported the Sicily Coin Collection
May 20th:- Victoria Day Ride - member rode to Pvte Richard Rolland Thompson's gravesite in Chelsea QC then went for lunch in Wakefield.
May 22nd:- Veterans Breaking the Silience - Trev, Kathy, Mapper and Cei, Mel and Witch attended the premiere showing of this documentary. This film was well done.
May 30th:- Trevor & Kathy, Hammer & Newf attended the Cambrai meeting to update their members on the D-Day at the Canadian War Musesum and National Memorial Ride and Trev provided an overview of the C.A.V. Spring National Meeting
June 1st:- Ottawa Motorcycle Ride for Dad - Great day, a little overcaste but we didn't get wet.
June 2nd:- D-Day at the Canadian War Museum and National Memorial Ride - Trev thanked those who helped out at the Museum and with escorting riders from the War Museum to the Canada Space Museum. Trev thanked the Road Captain for his great work so that these events went well. Thanks Hammer!

b) Upcoming Events

  • Wed Nights:- All unit members who can make it are encouraged to meet at the Hawthorne Tim Hortons for a Wednesday night meet and greet as well as a ride
  • June 3-8:- Americade, Lake George - A number of unit members are there or leaving tomorrow morning.
  • June 8-16:- Laconia, NH - this is the oldest bike week in North America
  • June 28-30:- Bikers Reunion

Trev also reported that he attended a Motorcycle Ride for Dad Blockers meeting and he thanked all the members who have volunteered to participate this year.

Unit BBQ - members in attendance agreed that $300. will be set aside to cover the costs of the BBQ. It was also agreed that members and their significant others would pay $5. each to confirm their attendance. Please let Kathy know if you are planning on attending. She will collect your fees at the July meeting, July 2nd.

Trev congratulated Jay on his promotion to Major. He also congratulated J.C. on his 1/2 marathon run at the Ottawa Race Weekend.
Highway of Heros patches are available Trev has ordered them for those who indicated they wanted one.
Nets sent Trev an email advising us that Campbell is part of Chris Neil's Rogers House Dream Team. Tev will circulate the email so those unit members who wish to can support Rogers House and see the articles about Campbell, Johanna and Nets.

7. Closing Remarks
Trev thanked everyone for coming out to the meeting.

Trev adjourned the meeting at 7:30pm and encouraged members to stick around and socialize.
