Minutes Paardeberg Unit, 1 CAV
December 6, 2011

7:05 pm Jay, Sgt-at-Arms called the meeting to order with a request for one minute of Silence for fallen soldiers and riders:

The silence was broken with the reciting of:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them, We will remember them.

In attendance:

Members: Big Al, Fran, Flatfoot, Lucster, Silly, Bgruff, Wayne, Mapper, Q-T-Cat, Newf, and JC
Guest: Ralph (Smilie) Somner, Gerry Potter

1. President’s Opening Remarks
Gepetto, President welcomed everyone and asked members and guests to introduce themselves.

Gepetto, thanked members for their support during his Presidency. He appreciates members support for each other, and the laid back relaxed culture of Paardeberg Unit. This was his second term as President of the Unit and he is looking forward to being a member and getting in as much riding as possible. Gepetto handed the reins of the Unit over to our new President Trev.

Trev thanked Gepetto for his leadership and acknowledged that as the unit we continue to evolve as people's lives take them in different directions. Paardeberg is a good, strong Unit which support their members.

It was reported that Watchdog is doing well in his rehab. He is looking forward to the next riding season and he should be back cross country skiing by Christmas.

2. Sergeant-at-Arms Report
a) Finance report: Jay reported our club balance is $250.94
b) Membership: Currently Unit membership is at 27 members.

3. Road Captain's Report
a) Activities:
Since the last meeting the Unit has:
November 12 met for breakfast at Busters in Lincoln Fields followed by a trip to the National War Museum to view the Portraits of Honour. Members are reminded that as a serving member or a veteran you get free parking, free entrance to the museum for yourself and 2 other guests, and as a veteran you receive a free lunch voucher.
December 3 CAV Ottawa Units Chritsmas party at the Barrhaven Legion was well attended and a lot of fun. Photos will be added to the Unit website.
December 4 a few members met at the Montreal Rd & St Laurent Blvd Tim Hortons prior to going to Beechwood Cemetary for Wreaths Across Canada where fresh evergreen wreaths with a red bow are placed on all graves of all veterans who have passed away. While there were only 3 Paardeberg members who attended The CAV was well represented by Cambrai, Coree, Vimy and Juno. This will be an annual event held on the 1st Saturday in December. December8 Trevor attended Spider's father's funeral, and extended sympathies to Spider and his family on their loss.
December 14 CF Appreciation a Canadian Forces Moral Welfare program invites veterans and serving members of the Canadian Forces to Reconnect at a Christmas reception at 1223 Michael Street. The CF Appreciation program gives veterans, serving members and their family members discounts on all kinds of services. Spider reported that he has started to build a ride plan for 2012. Members were encouraged to submit events that they wished to see listed on the unit ride calendar to him.

b) Website:
Spider reported has and will continue to load photos and videos from past rides and events to the website over the next while.

4. Presentations
Trev made the following presentations:

  • Silly received her name tag
  • Lucster received his name tag
  • A token of the Unit's appreciation were presented to the following Unit Executive members:

- Gepetto, as outgoing President
- Jay as outgoing Sgt-at-Arms
- Spider as outgoing Deputy Road Captain
- Trev as outgoing Vice President

5. Closing Remarks
Spider recounted how he first met Gepetto at a Tim Hortons at a time when he was a "Lone Wolf" rider. Gepetto invited him to a Paardeberg meeting during Gepetto's first term as President. Spider checked out the Unit and soon joined. It has been great riding with the unit and meeting other CAV members.

Trev thanked each outgoing Executive member for the excellant work on the Executive and looks forward to the coming year.
