June 7, 2011

7:00 pm Jay, Sgt-at-Arms called the meeting to order with a request for one minute of Silence for fallen soldiers and riders.
Especially Bombardier Karl Manning who was repatriated June 3, 2011.

The silence was broken with the reciting of:
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them, We will remember them.

1. President’s Opening Remarks
a) Welcome and introductions
Trev mentioned that it is his intention to keep the meetings short and sweet and not get all wrapped up in unnecessary discussion. He welcomed everyone to the meeting, inviting members to introduce themselves.

2. Road Captain Report
Hammer reported that since the last meeting members have ridden to Port Dover for Friday the 13th and some went on to Myrtle Beach Bike Week. Local events which occured since last meeting:

May 6th 5th Anniversary of Red Fridays, RC Legion Petawawa: CFRA radio station in Ottawa organized busses to travel to the 5ht Anniversary of Red Fridays event in Petawawa. Trev attended this event and noted that a number of Anzio members were there as well.

May 21 Renfrew County HOG Red Ride Renfrew County Fairgrounds, Renfrew ON: a few members attended this ride insupport of the Millitary Family Resource Centre in Petawawa

May 23 Victoria Day Ride to Pte Thompson Grave Site, in the Pioneer Cemetary, Chelsea, QC: 11 riders attended this event and the weather gods were good and kept away the rain. This ride is to honour Pte Thompson who earned the Queen's Scarf from Queen Victoria during the battle of Paardeberg during the Boer War in South Africa. The Queen's Scarf he earned is on display in the Canadian War Museum.

Jun 4 Motorcycle Ride for Dad Ottawa: Hammer thanked everyone who participated. There were 20 of us who met at Tim Hortons Saturday morning. 19 of these members were volunteer blockers. Gepetto rode in the ride to raise awareness of The CAV. A number of members continued on the poker run/lunch portion of the ride. There were 2,350 riders and approximately $415,000 was raised. The MR4D accomplished their goal of breaking 2,000 riders.

Jun 5 The CAV Invasion of the War Museum: This was the 2nd annual event and the first time that Paardeberg Unit hosted 1 C.A.V. 11 Paardeberg members were in attendance and volunteered to direct traffic; manage parking and to greet CAV members as they entered the Museum. Veterans received free entrance to the museum and a meal voucher for $11 to use in "The Mess" Two CAV only tours were arranged to take members through the museum. At 3:00 pm The CAV moved to the roof top for a memorial service lead by The CAV Padre, Padre Don. It was an excellant service followed by presentations. Lew McKenzie, CAV Old Guard welcomed two Old Guard members. Two CAV Bursaryies were given out: Rocky from Ortona Unit received $500 to assist his work with "At Risk Youth" in his Boxing Club. Tex from Ortona a second world war veteran and poet who also recited two of his poems. All in all a very moving event.

Hammer outlined the up coming ride:
Jun 11-13 Bikers in the Bay - This event is put on by Coree Unit. Watch your email for a message with the details on a ride to Campbell's Bay on Saturday. If you are going early and staying the weekend please send out a group email so other unit members who wish to participate can go with you. More info at http://www.bikesinthebay.com/

Jun 11 National Memorial Ride - A ride to Beechwood Millitary Cemetary - More info at http://www.nationalmemorialride.com

Jun 25 Paardeberg Unit BBQ - Spider is hosting this event, which will be a chicken BBQ lunch with salads, etc. An email will be going out with the details for the ride to Spider's.

That members and their significant others pay $5 each to attend and that up to $5 per member will be used to cover additional costs.
Kathy will be sending out an email to get the number for the BBQ and will collect the funds for the meal.

Hammer noted that the Unit BBQ will be his last ride event before he heads off on his year long posting. He will attend the July meeting and at that time Spider will become the Unit Road Captain.

Hammer asked for volunteers to organize and plan the following rides:

If this event is to be a go, someone needs to step up to organize it.

3. Sergeants-at-Arms
a) Finance report
Jay reported that unit fund are $443.34
b) Membership
Jay recapped current membership:34 members plus 1 honorary member and 1 youth member. He reported that 2 new members were in attendance. He welcomed Luckster and Silly. Lothar Brachmann attended the meeting as a guest. He met Spider at the Motorcycle Ride for Dad.

4. Webmaster
Spider reported that there hasn't been much to report on the website over the last month.

5. Other Business
Trev acknowledged and thanked Bgruff for hosting previous BBQs at his "ranch."

Trev reported that he attended the repatriation of Bombardier Karl Manning and following the ceremony the Minister of Defense and the Chief of Defense unveile the Portrait of Heros display. This is an impressive display. He recomends that everyone take the opportunity to visit this display.

He thanked Hammer for his organization of the blockers for the Motorcycle Ride for Dad and leading members on the poker run. Great job!

Trev thanked Gepetto and Hammer for thier work on organizing "The CAV Invasion" of the War Museum. It was a well organized day and a good time was had by all.

Trev reported that Q-T-Cat and Gepetto are investigating the purchase of the "Moon Mullins" Mug which will be engraved with Moon Mullins as the first recipient. Each year after the "Moon Mullins" Mug will be awarded to the Paardeberg Unit Rider of the Year.

Trev thanked Spider for stepping up a Road Captain when Hammer leaves on his posting.

Trev reported that Gepetto will be stepping down as President when his term ends in October. He encouraged members to consider who might be our next President. Members can nominate or step up themselves.
