Attendees:

Lavi, Sergeant at Arms called the meeting to order at 7:00pm

1. PRESIDENT’S OPENING REMARKS
Smokey welcomed everyone to the meeting and asked members to introduce themselves

2. PRESIDENT’S DISCUSSION ISSUES
a) Moved by Wayne, Seconded by Radar that the Agenda be adopted CARRIED
b) Moved by Gepetto, Seconded by Mapper that the Minutes of the October 3rd meeting be adopted. CARRIED
c) Business Arising:
i) ICROSS Video: Smokey reminded that the Sgt-at-Arms holds a copy of the CBC documentary on ICROSS, about 50 minutes long. This documentary answers any questions you may have about ICROSS.
ii) CAV dues: Smokey led a discussion regarding CAV national and unit dues. 2010 dues will be rising by $10 ($7 for insurance and $3 contingency) Smokey will be bringing up the process for increasing the 2010 CAV dues as a point of principle with National. A recommendation was made noting that the CAV could be more transparent by using the forum to allow members to vote on national issues such as dues, and to keep the lines of communication open to providing a more democratic process. Smokey will be meeting with Trapper on November 9th.

3. VICE PRESIDENT ISSUES
a) By-laws: housekeeping changes were discussed
i) Moved by Spider, Seconded by Radar that By-Law #4 Membership Management Item # 3 be removed in its entirety and all subsequent item numbers decrease by one. CARRIED
ii) Moved by Wayne, Seconded by Mapper that to By-Law #4 Membership Management Item # 5 be changed to:
4. National fees: fees for new CAV members and renewing CAV members are set by National. Changes in these fees will be communicated to the members of Paardeberg Unit as soon as they are made known. Unit dues are established by the members of Paardeberg Unit and must be voted on annually at the November meeting. CARRIED

iii) Moved by Wayne, Seconded by Mel that By-Law #4 Membership Management Item # 11 be changed to:
10. Membership renewals are to go through the unit; members will not communicate directly with 1 CAV or The CAV Headquarters. The renewal application is on The CAV website for printing and payment is to be made to the Sergeant-at-Arms by the date specified. CARRIED
iv) No changes will be made to the wording of item 16 as the text being removed was the previous wording for Annex A.

c) Unit Christmas Party: The Orleans Legion Branch 632 has been booked for Tuesday December 22nd and the caterer is booked. Dinner will cost $18.00. Members discussed the use of unit funds to offset the cost of dinner.
Moved by Wayne, Seconded by Mireille that unit members and one guest will pay $10 for their meal, additional guests will be $18.00. CARRIED

d) Website Update – Spider reported that he will update the unit By-laws on the website with the approved changes. He reminded members to check out our website to see what is new. Photos that he received over the riding season will be put up shortly. He reminded members to send in their photos and stories.

4. SERGEANT AT ARMS
a) Financial report: unit funds are currently $509.47
b) Membership: in 2010 each member will receive a CAV year pin. You will be required to wear your year pin at all times to show your membership is up to date.
c) Flowers/cards: the members agreed that the Sergeant at Arms has the authority to purchase flowers/cards on behalf of the unit in the event a member loses a family member.
d) Moved by Lavi, Seconded by Wayne that meetings of Paardeberg Unit will open with a minutes of silence and reading of the following verse from “For The Fallen” by Laurence Binyon:
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them, We will remember them.
CARRIED
d) 2010 dues: Moved by Spider, Seconded by François that the CAV dues for 2010 will be $40 per member with $5.00 being retained by the unit. CARRIED

5. ROAD CAPTAIN REPORT
Trevor recognized the outgoing Executive: Sheriff, Tom and Radar noting that he enjoyed working with them over the past few years. He welcomed the new Executive and congratulated them for stepping up to manage the unit. He enjoyed being Road Captain, noting that there had been some great unit rides. Paardeberg members keep their bikes well maintained and rode safely with no accidents.

Trevor stated being Road Captain is very rewarding and encouraged members to think about volunteering to be the 2010 Road Captain. Paardeberg has lots of capable members.

Trevor reviewed the schedule of events that the unit was involved in over the past month:
October 18th – Unit was invited to meet for breakfast with Cambrai and go for a ride. He noted that there were 4 of us and only one of them. It was a great ride out to Balderson.

Several members rode to the last repatriation: Smokey, Mel and Witch.

A forecast of 13 degrees C. for Sunday November 8th, it will be a great day to ride. The Rockland Legion holds their remembrance service the Sunday before Remembrance Day. Trevor invited members to join him by meeting at the Tim Horton’s in Rockland at 12:30 pm to ride to the Catholic Church parking lot for the start of the parade at 1:30 pm. Trevor encouraged members to attend remembrance services in their neighbourhoods. As a member of the Dominion Command Colour Party he will be parading at the National Cenotaph.

6. NEW BUSINESS
a) Correspondence: Kathy reviewed emails that were circulated to members:
i) Motorcycle Ride for Dad Fundraiser: Tickets for the November 26th Senators game against the Columbus Blue Jackets are available at $35 each with $12.70 of each ticket going to MRFD. Deadline for ordering tickets is November 7th.
ii) Toronto Motorcycle Show: Cambria has organized a bus at a cost of $45 per person including your ticket to the show. Participation must be confirmed and payment made no later than November 29th. Contact Smokey if you are interested in going.
b) General Discussion:
i) In August Trevor and Kathy attending the 2009 Harley Owners Group Canadian Rally in Calgary. At the rally Trev Deely Harley presented Canex with a 2009 Road King custom Military Appreciation bike which will be raffled off to hopefully raise $250,000 for the Military Families Fund. Tickets should be available at all Ontario Canex and Harley Davidson dealerships early in December. Kathy will monitor this and advise members when the tickets go on sale. Photos of the bike will be posted to our unit website www.paardeberg.wikidot.com
ii) Chevy invited everyone to attend the Mason’s Remembrance service at the Masonic Lodge on Walkly Road on Wednesday evening. If you are interested in attending please speak to Chevy following the meeting.
iii) Smokey asked for volunteers to assist him at Billings Bridge Shopping Malls tribute to Veterans on November 5th between 8 am and 3 pm.

7. PRESENTATIONS
Presentations were made:
Lavi incoming Sergeant at Arms presented outgoing Sergeant at Arms Radar with an engraved flask and Smokey presented Radar with a plaque in appreciation for his contribution to the Unit and thanked him for his attention to detail and excellent financial management.

Smokey presented outgoing Road Captain, Trevor with an engraved flask and plaque in appreciation for his contribution to the Unit and thanked him for his great rides

Smokey presented Mel and Witch with their nicknames

Smokey presented Watchdog with his yearbar.

The evenings draw was won by Alicat.

18. ADJOURNMENT
Smokey adjourned the meeting at 8:55pm.
