7:09 pm Sherain, Sgt-at-Arms called the meeting to order with a request for one minute of Silence in remembrance.

The silence was broken with the reciting of:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them, We will remember them.

1. President’s Opening Remarks
Mapper, President noted that it was a small gathering tonight. He reported that he had spoken to Mel prior to the meeting and advised us that Mel is in the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital room 5507. If you are able to please drop by to visit him.

2. Vice President Remarks
Don reported that he has been in contact with Magilla, President of Afghan Unit - Trenton regarding the 2017 Memorial Ride for Darren and Wayne. It will be scheduled for June 17 - date will be confirmed

3. Sergeant-at-Arms Remarks
Sherain reported:

  • 11 members from 2016 did not renew for 2017.
  • Current membership sits at 27 paid members.
  • The Fall CAV Kitshop order timeframe has closed.

October 2016

Oct 1 Sat UNIT Chase the Leaves Run - A great ride through Lanark lead by Big Al
Oct 6 Thurs - Ride to Wilno - Trev, J.C., Smiley, Kathy, Spider and Judi rode up to Wilno and had lunch with a group of former CAV members, it was a great day for a ride. We were joined by Spider's two brothers Dan and Bruce.
Oct 28 Fri - Poppy Drop on Parliament Hill - The Legion is presenting a virtual Poppy Drop on Parliament Hill. Each evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. from Oct. 28 to Nov. 11, 2016, 117,000 falling poppies will be projected onto the iconic Peace Tower and Centre Block. There is one poppy for each of Canada’s fallen.
Oct 30 Sun - Motorcycle Ride for Dad Volunteer Appreciation - Big Al, Trev and Kathy attended this event. Motorcycle Ride for Dad presented Paardeberg Unit a plaque of appreciation. Big Al accepted on behalf of the unit. It is hoped that the Blackburn Arms will allow it to be hung in the meeting room.

Nov 11th Fri UNIT - Paardeberg Members are encouraged to attend a Remembrance Day service of their choosing. Check with your local Legion for their events.

National War Memorial (10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) - Every year, the Royal Canadian Legion organizes the National Ceremony of Remembrance at the National War Memorial in downtown Ottawa. Arrive early to secure a good vantage point. Elgin Street is closed to traffic during the ceremony.

Canadian War Museum (10:40 a.m.) - On November 11, Memorial Hall, located inside the Museum’s main entrance, becomes the centerpiece. Here, at exactly 11:00 a.m. a beam of sunlight shines through a single window into Memorial Hall to perfectly frame the headstone from the grave of Canada’s Unknown Soldier. To observe the beam of light at 11:00 a.m. from within Memorial Hall, tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis as of 9:30 a.m. Museum admission is free on Remembrance Day. www.warmuseum.ca/remember

Beechwood Cemetery (10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) - A ceremony of Remembrance takes place at the National Military Cemetery on the grounds of Beechwood Cemetery. The ceremony honours all those who have fallen in the service of Canada and all Canadian Forces members interred at the cemetery. There is also a marching contingent including veterans, a band and a children’s choir performance.

Nov 20th Sun Noon to 4 pm UNIT - Motorcycle Ride For Dad - POOL at Dooley's, 2277 Gladwin Cres, Ottawa, ON K1B 4K9, Canada. Come on out for a fun afternoon of pool and support Ride for Dad. We have had fun in the past playing a little round robin tournament. Winner take all.

Dec 6thTue UNIT - Paardeberg Monthly Meeting - this will be the handover meeting for the incoming President and Vice President.
